Hi Guys, welcome back to another Competition Suit Shop Blog, where we talk about all things related to Bikini Competition! Today we’re going to talk about what to expect prior to your show day weekend, and the show day itself. We’ll be going over how the Show Day weekend usually looks like, though it may vary slightly, depending on your show, your federation etc.
We’ll be talking from the viewpoint of an NPC Bikini Competitor (IFBB, Olympia) as this is the most popular bikini competition federation and where most of you are competing in.
Before the Show
The only thing you really need before the show, or showing up on the weekend is booking for tan, hair, make-up and obviously your competition bikini!
Tan
Most NPC bikini competitions will offer tanning services as part of their registration package and that is what we recommend. This may be more expensive, but if you are a first time bikini competitor, we highly recommend you make things easier for yourself, and book the tan when registering.
Another option are self-tan kits that are sold by several popular brands like Pro-Tan, but this is probably best left for the more experienced athlete, who knows what tan color they prefer, and how to go on self-tanning to get that color. You don’t want to stand out in a bad way, so maybe be a bit risk averse with the self-tan. The only thing that should stand out is your physique!
Pro Tip: Book your tan for the latest possible time slot the day before the show, so you have it done and then just head to bed without running the risk of any jeopardy before the show!
Competition Bikini
Do not make the mistake of ordering your Competition Bikini at the last minute! A Grade-A Custom-Made bikini that’s perfectly made to your size, style and colors, will require a few weeks to be tailored to you. We at Competition Suit Shop highly recommend that you start looking at your competition suits from the 16 Weeks Out mark. You can drop us a DM on Instagram or email us at info@competitionsuitshop with no obligations to buy. We just want to help you be the best competitor on stage, and we offer Free Mock designs so you can start understanding the color palettes you want to exhibit. You will have a butler-esque experience with us as our dedicated sizing and style expert will guide you on the process step-by step.
We’ve also launched our 3D Visualizer where you can customize your competition bikinis and view in Real-Time online! See how your bikini will look on you with no obligations to buy, and have fun with the process!
NPC Card
You need to get your NPC Card before the show. Technically, you can get it at the show, but it’s more expensive. The NPC Card is an annually billed membership to the NPC Bodybuilding association (which you should keep active, as long as you’re competing). You will need to be an NPC member to be able to compete in any NPC event.
Necessities for the Weekend
Think about this as packing for a weekend trip, but perhaps more extensive and specific. You will need a bag for backstage. Pro Tip: Get a rolling bag, or carry-on suitcase. You want to avoid lugging anything across your torso to damage your tan, or competition suit. And it also makes sense because you’re already in depletion and don’t want to exert any unnecessary energy.
Competition Bikini and Posing Suit
One of the first things you need in your bag is obviously you competition bikini and posing suit. We recommend putting on your competition bikini once you get to your show venue (on the show day). Some may prefer to try it on the morning of the show, to assess how they’re looking overall with their tan, makeup and do a quick final check-in. But, you run the risk of exposing the rhinestones to tanning products, so we don’t recommend that. You can use your posing suit instead to do the final check-in.
You will have the opportunity to find out more about the venue you’ll be competing in when you head in for registration, the day before the competition. We recommend that you take this opportunity to note down where the bathrooms are, where the mirrors are, and what the layout is like. This will be helpful for the next day when you need to get changed etc.
For those that have the luxury of bringing an extra Competition Bikini, we would recommend that you also carry a spare one for two main reasons. Firstly, (especially for rentals, or second-hand bikinis) you may run into some wardrobe malfunctions, or fitting issues. Secondly, you might not like the overall look that you’re bringing to the table during pre-judging, especially when taking into account other factors like Tanning, you can wear another color to give yourself more flair in the final round!
All in all these malfunctions or stressful situations can be easily mitigated by the option to go with a specialized brand that focuses on making Custom-Made competition bikinis from Competition Suit Shop.
